WhatsApp Green Tick Verification: How to Get It for Your Business

Trust is the currency of digital commerce. When a customer receives a message from an unsaved number, their immediate psychological reaction is skepticism. Is this spam? Is this a phishing attempt? Will clicking this link compromise my data?

The green checkmark badge next to a contact's name on WhatsApp—officially known as an "Official Business Account" (OBA)—solves this instantly. It signifies that Meta has verified the brand's authenticity. More importantly, it replaces the phone number at the top of the chat screen with your actual Brand Name, even if the customer has never saved your number to their contacts.

Securing the green tick elevates your brand's prestige and dramatically increases open and conversion rates. However, getting it requires navigating a strict verification process. Here is how to do it.

Prerequisite 1: You Must Be on the WhatsApp Business API

Let's clear up the most common misconception immediately: you cannot get a green tick on the free WhatsApp Business app downloaded from the App Store. The green badge is an enterprise feature strictly reserved for businesses using the WhatsApp Business API via an approved Business Solution Provider (BSP).

Prerequisite 2: Complete Meta Business Verification

Before WhatsApp will even look at your green tick application, your Meta Business Manager must be verified. This proves you are a legally registered entity.

  • Go to your Meta Business Manager Settings -> Security Center.
  • Start the Verification process.
  • You will need to upload legal documents (Certificate of Incorporation, Business License, or VAT registration).
  • You must also provide proof of address (a utility bill or bank statement in your company's name).
  • Wait for Meta to approve this (usually 2 to 5 business days).

Prerequisite 3: Enable Two-Step Verification

Security is paramount for OBAs. You must enable Two-Step Verification (2FA) for your WhatsApp API phone number in your WhatsApp Manager dashboard. The application will be auto-rejeected without this.

The Crucial Element: "Notable" Brand Status

This is where 90% of applications fail. Meta explicitly states that OBAs are only given to "notable" brands. In their definition, notable means "a well-known, often searched brand or entity."

Paying for ads does not make you notable. Having a verified Facebook page does not automatically make you notable on WhatsApp. Notable status is proven through PR and organic presence. When you apply, you must submit up to five supporting links. These links should be:

  • Major news articles written about your company (e.g., TechCrunch, Forbes, national newspapers).
  • Wikipedia pages.
  • Press releases carried by major syndicates.
  • Do not submit links to your own website, your social media profiles, or paid advertorials—Meta's reviewers will recognize and ignore them.

"The Green Tick isn't something you buy; it's something you prove you've earned through brand equity and public recognition."

How to Submit the Application

Once you are on the API, Meta verified, 2FA enabled, and have your PR links ready, the actual application takes minutes.

  1. Log into your Meta Business Manager.
  2. Navigate to the WhatsApp Manager -> Account Tools -> Phone Numbers.
  3. Click on the specific phone number you wish to verify.
  4. Under the "Profile" section, request an Official Business Account.
  5. Fill in the justification (briefly explain what your business does and why customers look for you).
  6. Paste in your 3-5 high-quality PR links.
  7. Submit.

What Happens if You Are Rejected?

Rejections are incredibly common. If denied, your account continues to function normally as a standard Business API account (you just won't have the green badge). Meta allows you to reapply after 30 days. Don't simply resubmit the same application; use that month to secure more PR placements to strengthen your case for "notability."

Do You Need It to Succeed?

No. While the green tick is excellent for branding, standard API accounts still benefit from API automation, chatbots, catalog integration, and blast marketing. If your PR strategy isn't yet at the level required for a green tick, focus on delivering an incredible conversational experience first. The brand notability will follow.

Setting up the API architecture properly is the first step toward getting verified. Contact AdaptNXT to migrate your business to the official enterprise API and prepare for verification.
